In the brain neurones connect at synapses. This is where signals pass form one to another, but not all connectson are equally strong, the idea of synapse weights cacpures this strength. In an artificial neural network these are encoded as a numerical value, but in the brain ithe synapses can physically grow or shrink depending on use, a key part of long-term memory.
